Premiership speculation, opinion & analysis

Brisbane – The Greens

Ipswich – Palaszczuk launches Business Development Fund

  • Tony Moore reports, “Labor again hammered the LNP’s failure to create jobs as it announced a $40 million fund to help start-up businesses apply for grants to create jobs. Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk stood at the Claypave export paver business to launch the four-year Business Development Fund”: Labor to fund start-up businesses.

Brisbane – Newman would rather lose

Amy Remeikis reports, “The  LNP has a very clear stand point that we won’t do deal with independents and minor parties to cobble together an unstable chaotic government that is bad for Queensland, he said. We have said that in the past and we say that again now. That is why it is so important that people not vote for minor parties, because they will wake up with Annastacia Palaszczuk as premier. They need to vote for a strong team with a strong plan”: LNP would rather lose than have hung parliament.

Amy Remeikis reports, “Queensland could be headed back to the polls if the January 31 election results in a hung parliament, with both sides ruling out negotiating with the crossbench for power”: Back to the polls if hung parliament is the result.

Asset leasing to fund roads

Matt Eaton reports, “Premier Campbell Newman says a plan to address traffic congestion north of Brisbane will be paid for by the LNP’s plan to lease public assets”: Asset leasing essential to fund road projects, says Campbell Newman.

Amy Remeikis reports, “Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss has leapt to the defence of Tony Abbott, saying he was “surprised” the Prime Minister had been criticised for not visiting Queensland, and adding the state LNP did not need federal help”: Warren Truss defends Tony Abbott for not visiting Queensland.

Brisbane – Bill Shorten

  • “Campbell Newman has made it clear, he’s his own man, keen to emphasise the distance between Tony Abbott and the LNP. But that’s in complete contrast to ALP. The Labor leader Bill Shorten is in Brisbane again today, campaigning for Annastacia Palaszczuk. Labor leader Bill Shorten joined the program”: Labor Leader Bill Shorten on @612Brisbane.

Strong Choices will cause adverse impact

Agriculture – Wishlist from the bush

The carbon tax enters the campaign

  • From the archives, September 21, 2014: “The state government will spend its $30 million in carbon tax savings cutting public transport fares across Queensland”: Public transport fares cut by five per cent.
  • From the archives, September 22, 2014: “Cutting public transport fares by five per cent will not stop GoCard users rorting the system, according to advocacy group Rail Back on Track”: Brisbane fare cut won’t stop rorts.

Bookies update

  • “Bookmakers have considerably shortened odds for an LNP election win on January 31, while giving Premier Campbell Newman a stronger chance of returning in Ashgrove”: Odds shorten on LNP victory.

New Labor candidates

  • “Maroochydore will be contested by Bill Gissane, who stood for the seat of Fisher at the 2013 Federal election campaign, securing 40.25% of the two-party preferred vote. Labor’s Buderim candidate is Elaine Hughes, who stood for the party in Fairfax at the 2013 Federal election”: Labor reveals candidates for Buderim and Maroochydore.

LNP pre-orders Courier Mail front page

  • Interesting revelation from @9NewsBrisbane’s Katherine Feeney. In a LNP email, the party revealed it had confirmed a front page of The Courier Mail would be attacking the chaos of a hung parliament where the independents and minor parties held the balance of power. Sure enough, today’s front page did reflect the sentiment describing the group as a ‘motley crew’.
