On election night at the Wangaratta Arts Centre, a movement leader, Susan Benedyka  read out a the Voice4Indi movements vision statement of 6 September 2012. No wonder Orange Indi took the roof off a year later.

Spirit and Voice of Indi – Linking Vision and Success

Vision for Indi

*  An active 21st century democracy based on civic engagement, respect and ideas

*  An electorate with a range of strong and competitive candidates

*  Leadership with vision that truly represents, and deliver for, the people of Indi

Overarching statement of success

The Independent 4 Indi committee implements a process of civic engagement in Indi which leads to effective, positive and committed representation from our Federal MP. I4I will be a financially strong organisation, employing a campaign manager and having a group of engaged volunteers. Our candidate will attract high levels of support from the local community through expanding involvement by the I4I committee, which will be demonstrated by voting at the next election. A wide cross section of the community will be represented on the committee and in the campaign, and be genuinely engaged in working for the community of our community in Indi.

Indicators of success

*  The people of Indi are recognised for their progressive and interesting ideas, and for transforming these into action (rather than Indi being perceived as being the ‘personality’ of the sitting member)

*  Indi is known nationally for the way its citizens engage and for their enthusiasm for new ideas to build their community

*  Indi becomes a case study for ‘grass roots’ community engagement

*  Indi is recognised for its innovation in connecting its citizens

* Indi has a respected independent candidate who improves public discourse across the electorate and who attracts wide support from voters at the 2013 election

  1. Seems as if I4I has achieved all of its goals regardless of the actual electoral outcome.

    A huge success.
    Congrats to all.

  2. Margo, I can’t find any other way to contact you as I don’t have a Twitter account and I cannot find an email address for you. I am very surprised at your tweet about Clive Palmer and the AEC. There is something very fishy going on in Fairfax, for example Peter Wellington’s wife (Wellington being a politician of great integrity) has commented that counting at the Coolum Beach booth is chaotic and open to abuse, and there were 768 MISSING votes at the PPVC which magically turned up at a completely different booth. The AEC’s press release contains at least one mendacity I know of, they claim they found the error themselves. They did not, it was brought to their attention by a private citizen on 12 September, and it took them five days to ‘find’ the solution. I have worked in the public service myself, and I can tell you we often embroidered explanations when we didn’t quite know what had really happened. I’d say the whole thing smells to high heaven, and warrants independent investigation, which we are not likely to get unless persons like yourself take it on.

Check Poll Bludger on Crikey for the actual story, not the MSM or Q&A. As for Q&A, I was astonished that the panel, including Tony Jones, did not seem to understand what the issue was – here was me thinking that the people on the panel were mostly intelligent.
