Latte-sipping city slicker @VanBadham gives thanks for rural independents and sees a new dawn for values in politics

By Van Badham  August 27, 2013 The tactical employment of demeaning stereotypes has always been popular in the Australian political discourse.  Just lump together some universally loathed behaviours – like vanity, self-indulgence or entitlement – dress them as communities you’re trying to discredit, and parade them like carnival villains. “Union thugs”, anybody? “Feminazis”?  “People smugglers”? “Asylum […]

Indi locals protest Mirabella’s claims on health centres – and her preferences stir bad bushfire memories

By Wayne Jansson, !8 August, 2013 The contest for Indi hit the national media this week with a hint of friction in Liberal-National coalition ranks, as reports emerged of National Party members being involved in independent Cathy McGowan’s push to unseat the Liberals’ Sophie Mirabella. “I’m getting support right across the political spectrum in Indi,” […]

‘The night I got politically engaged’: How @TomAnderson62 found himself live tweeting #Indivotes

By Tom Anderson @TomAnderson62 I have always been fascinated with politics, especially elections. I guess that started when I worked as a ‘Polling Clerk’ at 15 at a booth at Mont Park in Macleod back in about 1977. How did a 15 year old get a job that had a prerequisite of ‘must be enrolled on electoral […]

Cathy McGowan’s campaign for Indi enters the national spotlight as tweeps get the message out

by Cambell Klose August 14, 2013 Two months ago I wrote an article for No Fibs about Cathy McGowan running for the seat of Indi, in which I said “Cathy and her supporters are on a mission to let Liberal incumbent Sophie Mirabella know that she can’t take the people of Indi for granted, one town […]

Coalition big guns and generic letters leave locals cold in Mirabella’s Indi

by Wayne Jansson August 12 In more signs Indi Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella is under pressure, campaign advertisements started appearing on local TV on Sunday featuring Joe Hockey. Is Sophie’s brand so damaged in Indi she can’t front her own advertisements? One of the criticisms of Mirabella heard most often is that she’s a Melbourne […]

But Sophie, @jansant IS a constituent and others are reading his posts

By Wayne Jansson, 10 August, 2013 People who have been reading my posts from the seat of Indi will be aware I have been trying to catch up with Sophie Mirabella for some time now. I first contacted Adam Wyldeck (her media adviser) on July 9. He asked me to email my request and said […]

Mirabella under siege in Indi

By Wayne Jansson, 7 August, 2013 Now that the election has been called, it’s time to give my first seat update on Indi. The campaign period wasn’t even a day old when the first shock came through – independent candidate Alan Lappin pulled out after suffering a heart attack. Alan received 5.84% of the primary […]
